 Private or Invitation Only Programs
The affiliate marketing, or percentage of sale, model appeals to many businesses but concerns about the quality of the affiliates who might want to join their program puts them off.
Affiliate networks typically boast that they have 1000s of affiliates but any merchant will tell you that only a small percentage of those affiliates actually make any sales. Others complain that rogue affiliates promote their sites in a way that could damage their brand, or opportunistic affiliates bid on their brand names on the search engines.
This is where private or invitation only programs give you the best of both worlds - you can use the affiliate marketing business model but deal only with publishers that you know and trust.
Why can't affiliate networks filter affiliates for me?
Reputable networks do filter affiliates to some extent - a browse through forums will bring up messages from disaffected affiliates who have been banned by networks. However, merchants requirements vary and what one merchant wants in an affiliate can be quite different to another merchant. It is important that when using open affiliate networks that they provide good, transparent reporting to help you monitor and nurture your relationships with affiliates.
